I went through so many hospital bag checklist when I was about to have my son making sure I wasn’t leaving anything off the list. After having my son, I realize it was all a load of crap!
Speaking of loads of crap, if you haven’t checked out my post 5 Newborn Essentials that aren’t worth the price, you should do it now. It will save you a lot of unnecessary money.
Half of the things I brought to the hospital for him I didn’t need. Why? The hospital provides everything the baby needs to be successful and thrive!
They have all of this down to a science (literally) and your baby will want for nothing except your love and affection. Looking back I realized there were a handful of items that were actually a necessity for my baby and I’m going to share them with you.
Forget everything else they told you; here are the ONLY 5 things you need on baby’s hospital checklist.
1. Going Home Outfit
These are some really cute outfits for baby to go home in. This is very important. The hospital will provide onesies and t-shirts for your baby to wear throughout their stay in the hospital. You must provide clothes for baby to ride home in.
The going home outfit is not just significant because they are leaving in it is very important because they will be taking pictures in this outfit.
Most hospitals have a photographer that will come around and do a photo shoot with the baby and parents before they leave the premises; or you could do your own photo shoot if you’d like. This outfit will be memorabilia for years to come.
Mommy tip: Take two outfits in different sizes because you never know what size your baby is going to be. The doctors thought I was going to have a 9 pounder because of my gestational diabetes. He wound up being barely over 7lbs so his going home outfit swallowed him whole. You want to have good pictures of your child to remember the moment of birthing a human into this world.
2. Car Seat
Now I know this item can’t actually fit in a bag, but it is crucial to bring a car seat to the hospital. If not, you will not leave with your baby! They have to see you put your baby into the car seat and some hospitals also check the car seat to make sure it is in working condition before you strap the baby in.
You can also get the 3-in-1 car seat that will grow with the child so you only have to purchase one. This is the car seat I used for my little one and it has been nothing short of a blessing.
I love it and even with a smaller baby it was the perfect fit. I highly recommend this brand.
3. Pediatrician Info
This is another one of those things you have to have or they wont let you leave the hospital. Before you even go in to labor you should find a pediatrician for your child.
You simply call the doctor or stop by. Tell them you are about to have a baby and would like to have them as a care provider when the child is born.
They will set up a tentative appointment for the babies two week check up and you will have to give that information to the nurses before leaving the hospital.
Mommy Tip: Keep all your information in a file folder like the one above. You are going to get a lot of paperwork before you leave the hospital. You want to be prepared so you don’t lose everything!
This is something the hospital will provide however if there is a specific formula you want your baby to have you should bring it with you. You want to test the formula with your baby while you are in the care of doctors.
I exclusively breast fed for 6 months after having my baby. He didn’t not like any other formula than this one! I thought he would never be able to drink formula until my doctor recommended this brand and I am so thankful!
Hospitals are very cold and your little one will need to `be bundled up at all times. This blanket is perfect for keeping baby warm and comforted, especially while taking pictures.
You could also bring some type of swaddle blanket such as this one which has Velcro or hook attachments to quickly and tightly wrap baby up. They have just came out of the womb and the adjustable swaddlers will make them feel tight and comforted.
