This is for the frugal millenni-moms who see all of those Expensive baby products and wonder is it really worth it? I get this question a lot from my new mommies who want the best for their new baby but also want the best price.
Well, I’m here to help! If you haven’t seen my article 6 Ways to Save Money on Baby Care Essentials you are missing out on a great way to get baby items practically for free. Go ahead and click on the link and come back!
So, I might offend some people with this post. If you live and die by some of these expensive baby items then that is perfectly fine, keep using them. However, if you would like to save money and get other products that work just as well, if not better, than read on.
Please note that the prices I have listed below are estimates based on retail value and do not reflect the ability to get these items for a cheaper price.
So, without further explanation, here are 5 expensive baby products that aren’t worth the price!
I see some moms already pulling out their hair. The halo bassinet is a wonderful product if you are able to use it correctly and you don’t mind doing a little extra work in the middle of the night to get the baby out.
The problem I had with the Halo is the bassinet had to be extremely high in order for the swivel motion to be effective and reach over the bed. Once it was that high I was no longer able to have a clear view of the baby.
Another thing that really irked me, it wasn’t able to get low enough to have him level with me by the bed. So if your short or your bed is low to the ground, your screwed.
Another function of the Halo is the ability to move the front of the bassinet down to have easier access for getting the baby out. However, it is very difficult to maneuver and it hurts your arm while your trying to scoop out a crying baby.
The bassinet looks great and sounds great but its just not functional. For a whopping $225 and up, it should be able to do a lot more. So for those reasons and many more, I do not recommend the Halo Bassinet.
So, what should I get instead?
I recommend a Fisher Price Soothing Motions or the Mi Classic 2-in-1 Bassinet. Both of these will be so much more functional! The Mi Classic was rated the top bassinet in 2018 and I see why. Its simple design and easy travel capacity makes it ideal for holding your baby.
The Fisher Price is also a soother that will help your little one drift off to sleep. These are must haves for a better night’s sleep.
2. Doca-Tot
The Doc A Tot looks very modern and sleek but the functionality is the same as 100 other products that are out there. The products claim to fame is that its great for co-sleeping and you can take it anywhere.
The barrier that makes the doc a tot a great co sleeper only works for so long. Once the child is old enough to move around on their own they can easily get over the barrier.
The design of the product makes it easy to lay your baby down wherever you’d like, however there are multiple products that do the exact same thing for a fraction of the price.
I honestly have no idea why the doc a tot is so expensive starting at $195, but it’s not worth it.
So, what should I get instead?
I recommend a Snuggle Me organic or a baby lounger such as this one. Both of these are great for co-sleeping and portability. They do the same job as a Doc a tot without the price tag.
The Snuggle Me design is really cute and functional. The baby lounger is perfect for traveling and taking baby wherever you need to go. With all of these products remember to supervise baby while in use.
This diaper pail is great for holding odors and keeping your home fresh. The step function makes for being hands free when you have a dirty diaper in your hand.
The Munchkin Diaper Pail is functional for keeping smells at bay.
There is nothing functionally wrong with this product, it does what it says it’s supposed to do.
The only issue is the price. Starting at over $50 a pop this diaper pail doesn’t do anything other diaper pails don’t do. It’s just not worth the money.
So what should I get instead?
The Diaper Genie Expressions is only $35 and works like a charm. I have two of these at home and I’ve never had the dirty diaper smell in my house.
It still has the step to keep your hands free while throwing a poopy diaper in the can. I wouldn’t allow you to skimp on something such as odor so believe me when I say it works!
When you think diapers, you think pampers. It is the universal baby products in the U.S. I might hurt some peoples feelings with this one but pampers brand is terrible quality. The diapers deteriorate and the wipes are paper thin.
They personally did not work for my baby and there are many other mothers who do not like them as well.
If you get more of their high end products they might be better but this article is about saving money not spending it so in general Pampers is not my go-to.
So what should I get instead?
Before I start down my rabbit hole, please understand huggies is not much cheaper than pampers (retail price wise) but you can find deals on huggies products a lot easier than Pampers.
I would also recommend off brands such as Parent’s choice and Kirkland Signature. I personally love huggies! They win over pampers any day.
I haven’t had any issues with leaks or tears. There are other brands that work well too, however they are usually expensive. Huggies is reliable and you won’t have to give your last.
They also have a lot of coupons and sales that even further reduces the price. My husband and I made quite the stock pile before my son was born.
Mommy Tip: Try different brand diapers and wipes in the beginning to see which ones work best for your baby. Also, buy diapers in bulk once you know what brand you love!
You would think this expensive baby product would have 5 star reviews but it doesn’t. When the Mamaroo hit the market every mom was running to the shelves thinking their crying baby troubles were over. Nice try!
The hype of this device died down very quickly!
There are multiple settings on the Mamaroo but I have heard many mother say their child didn’t like the motion, it takes up a lot of space and its not worth the cost. Imagine spending $219 on a baby product that you hardly ever use. Crazy right?
So what should I get instead?
The Fisher Price Cradle and Swing. After hearing many moms rave about this product, I had to get it.
When I tell you my baby practically lived in this thing for the first two weeks after getting home from the hospital; It’s like they knew exactly what baby needed when they were making this product.
You can turn the swing two different ways and play multiple lullabies from the mobile on top. This is definitely one of my go-to baby items and I will recommend it hands down!
So there you have it, 5 expensive baby products that are not worth the price!
I also gave you some alternative products that I know for a fact work miracles.
If there are some expensive products I left out, leave them in the comments; I want to know about them!

As a mom of two, I agree with all of this! I own the Halo Bassinest, and while it’s…fine…I think I’d do it differently next time!
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this way!
This is awesome info! I’m in the process of finalizing my own baby registry and will definitely be looking more into the snuggle me organic since I was originally looking at the Doca-tot!
